Captain V President Away Day

27th July 2022 Tadmarton Heath

After much backwards and forwards and teams and pairings changing often, 30 Ogbourne Downs members, including two professionals, descended on Tadmarton Heath Golf Club (who were celebrating their centenary year) to resurrect what was an annual match between the Captain and President’s representatives.

The course was very dry but the staff at Tadmarton had done a really good job in presenting a good course to play on. Tadmarton turned out to be a good society course although the two pros tried to disprove this fact with numerous balls going missing.

A large group gathered on the first tee and we are not sure if they just hoped to see the President and Captain fluff the opening lines, or if like moths they were just attracted by the bright white light being reflected off their brand new shoes. (One intentional and one by accident as the original pair were still sat at home in his garage)

The pairings had been selected with a view to producing close matches and resulting in not too many shots being conceded in any match. This seemed to be achieved as of the eight Better Ball Stableford Matches that took place three were tied and another two were decided by one stableford point.

After the playing was complete normal stories of heroic recovery shots and unbelievable misses were shared over a couple of soft drinks overlooking the short par 3 7th, and everyone was impressed with the aerobatic display performed by the Spitfire during the round.

The final score was a win for the Captain by 4.5 matches to 3.5 (note to future presidents – use total stableford points to decide result).

A meal followed and prizes awarded for nearest the pins etc.

All in all a really good day was had by everyone and hopefully similar events will continue in future years and if so a return to Tadmarton could well be considered

Winners were

Tom Heppell, Charlie Cossins, Shaun Lewis and Tim Miles,

Shaun Lewis won best score of the day for his 39 points

Thanks to

Gary Fardon, Dave Carter and Charlie Cossins for their support in providing/obtaining prizes.
