Ogbourne Downs Golf Club

Ogbourne Downs Golf Club, Wiltshire, UK

A fabulous, challenging downland course set on the Marlborough Downs, a true gem.

The Move to Ogbourne

This is arguably the most significant event in the Club’s history. At the time, there was much debate as to the exact parcel of land to purchase. There was on option of lad in Liddington with sixty or seventy acres at 25/- and acre; there was a parcel of 239 acres in Ogbourne – good land by no access and finally the current site. There was some horse trading involved, rather trading over grazing rights but a price of £1,250 was settled on in June 1928 with free grazing for the vendor until September of 1928 and grazing rights reverting to the Club thereafter.

Throughout the winter of 1928 to 1929 the records show that construction progress was good, despite the local meteorological records showing it to have been one of the worst winters in many years.

Play ceased at Chisledon on 24th March 1929 and play commenced on the first 9 at Ogbourne three days later. The second 9 was completed and the full 18 holes were declared open on 6th May 1929.
